The Secret Symbols of the Gondola: From the Prow Iron to the Dolphin

Elena Giacon • February 9, 2026

A gondola is not just a boat; it is a visual map of Venice’s history. Every ornament and carving hides a deep meaning that connects the vessel to the city it serves.

What does the Prow Iron (the "Comb") represent?

The Prow Iron (or Ferro di Prua) is the most iconic element. Its "S" shape mirrors the curves of the Grand Canal. The six forward-facing teeth represent the six Sestieri (districts) of Venice: San Marco, Castello, Cannaregio, San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro. The single tooth facing backward represents the island of Giudecca. The rounded top evokes the Doge’s Hat (Corno Ducale), while the small arch above the last tooth represents the Rialto Bridge.

Has the Prow Iron always looked like this?

Not at all. The iron is the result of a long evolution. In past centuries, it was much simpler, smaller, and thinner, resembling a dagger or a spearhead. It was only in the 18th and 19th centuries that it took on the large size and symbolic meanings we know today, also serving as a vital counterweight to balance the gondolier at the stern.

What is the "Scimier" and the decorated bulkhead?

The front part of the gondola is often enriched by the Scimier, a sculpted or cast ornament that acts as a crest. Below it lies the front bulkhead, a section of wood that is often finely decorated, painted, or carved with mythological scenes, floral patterns, or noble coats of arms. These details were used to display the prestige and wealth of the family who owned the boat.

What is the meaning of the Dolphin on the stern?

At the opposite end, on the stern, you will often find a small metal decoration shaped like a Dolphin. This animal is an ancient symbol of Venice’s unbreakable bond with the sea. It represents protection for sailors and speed, reminding everyone that Venice was born from the water and built its empire upon it.

Where can I see these symbols up close?

To truly appreciate these masterpieces, we recommend our Grand Canal Gondola Experience: a guided tour aboard a gondola through the Grand Canal and the city's most beautiful hidden waterways. During the tour, we will also visit the Gondola Gallery, where you can see a sectioned gondola, admire the rare Felze (ancient cabins), and discover all construction secrets through our 3D VR experience.
