The 4 Secrets of the Gondola: Discover the Myth of Venice

1. Why is the way of rowing in Venice unique in the world?

The Venetian navigation system, known as Voga alla Veneta, is an art with no equal that exists only in our lagoon. Unlike any other boat, the gondolier rows standing up and facing forward, positioned at the stern. This "elevated" position is so particular that the gondolier's feet are located almost at the same level as the passengers' heads: a unique perspective that allows the rower to see over the bow and maneuver with millimetric precision through the narrowest canals.

2. Why are all gondolas black?

In the past, gondolas were extremely lavish, decorated with gold and precious fabrics by noble families to flaunt their wealth. To put a limit on this excess, the Republic of Venice issued the Sumptuary Laws (Leggi Suntuarie). These regulations mandated the color black for all boats, unifying the appearance of the Venetian fleet and creating the iconic, elegant, and sober image that we admire today.

3. How were gondolas visible at night?

Before electric lighting, navigating the "rii" after sunset was a complex challenge. Every gondola was equipped with an onboard light, a lantern called "Feràl" in Venetian. It was strategically placed to signal its presence to other vessels and illuminate the path among the water's reflections, making night navigation safe and even more evocative.

4. What makes the gondola's structure so special?

The gondola is a masterpiece of naval engineering: it consists of over 280 pieces made from eight different types of wood. Its most incredible feature is its asymmetry: the hull is tilted to one side to balance the weight of the gondolier who rows from only one side, allowing the boat to proceed straight through the currents without any apparent effort.

How can I experience the Gondola for myself?
